The Brookhaven Police Department consists of a Chief, a Detective, eight full-time patrol officers, eleven part-time patrol officers.
The department has a Traffic Safety Officer, a Community Policing Officer, a First Aid and CPR instructor, a DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Officer, a Firearms Instructor and Bike Patrol Officers.
The police chief takes an active role in the education of the children in the community. The police department has had an active educational program for students in four elementary schools since 1981 (Coebourn, Parkside, Our Lady of Charity, The Christian Academy). Recently the programs have been expanded to the middle school (Northley) and the high school (Sun Valley), which are in an adjacent township. The department began a Citizen's Police Academy in 1997, which proved to be successful.
A full time police officer was hired under the COPS grant to strive for community policing. The department has had a continuous Law Enforcement Trading Card Program since 1993. Bicycles have been awarded as prizes, for those who collect the entire set, courtesy of local businesses. "Cop Card" tee shirts are awarded to all winners along with participating in a McDonalds party or pizza party with the Chief of Police and officers. Students have been involved in writing contests on the hazards of driving under the influence and underage drinking. Winners receive "Safe and Sober" sweatshirts and tee shirts courtesy of the Delaware County Safety Project. The bicycle patrol, when possible, has also proved to be popular with our residents. Officers are trained by instructors of the International Police Mountain Bike Association.
The police department and members have been the recipient of numerous community awards throughout the years. Members of the police department and the police chief have received over a dozen Governor's Highway Safety Awards over the last decade, along with numerous other awards.
