Brookhaven Adopts New Seal PDF Print E-mail
bh-seal-largeIn recognition of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the borough, council adopted a new official borough seal.

Conceptualized by resident Mary Jo Ruth and graphically designed by local artist Greg Gardner, the new seal reflects the borough’s rich historical roots with special emphasis on agriculture, education, and the economy.

"I would like to thank council for the help and support I was given with this project," said Ruth. "I received a great amount of assistance from Greg (Gardner), my husband, John, and borough secretaries Mary Buddle McKinley and Natalie Pino."
The four sections of the seal include a mill, which reflects the businesses formerly located on the Chester and Ridley creeks; a likeness of a stallion representing the large horse farm once owned by John J. Crozer which was located on Edgmont Avenue in the area of the current Brookhaven Community Church; a Holstein cow representing the various dairy farms in the area; and a drawing of the old George Washington School, formerly located yards from the southwest corner of Edgmont Avenue.

Other symbols appearing on the shield include wheat and corn shocks, which celebrate Brookhaven’s agricultural past; and olive branches, symbolizing peace and prosperity.

"I would like to acknowledge retired Brookhaven Junior High School Librarian Frances Owens who contributed greatly to this endeavor," said Ruth. "Her history project preserved a lot of the history and information we have here in the borough. I used this work previously as a constant reference when writing the 50th anniversary commemorative booklet."

Council said the new seal will appear on official stationary and other correspondence as well as in several other locations.
